Cubs scouting out new recruits

Event at park highlights organization's offerings

Residents might have been wondering what a dozen tents were doing out at Eufay Woods Park last weekend. The answer was simply the local Plumas Lake Cub Scout Pack 513 showing the community a little bit about what they are and what they can offer the young people in the area.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to meet other kids and to participate in a program for life,” said Barb Osmun, committee chair, Pack 513.

The scouts were out at Eufay Park throughout the weekend, and on Saturday afternoon they offered the residents an opportunity to try some of the things the pack participates in throughout the year. Set up all throughout the park were several types of games, including a full archery range that gave the kids the chance to try their skills under the guidance of a Boys Scouts range officer.

In addition to the traditional games, the scouts participated in a barbeque dinner and campfire complete with songs. The culmination of the evening involved the current scouts “crossing over” to their next level within the organization.

The year-round organization hoped it presence would give residents an idea of what Scouts can offer kids starting at the first-grade level and the new doors the organization can open as far as learning and fun experiences.

“The kids get to participate in many different activities throughout the year,” said Osmun. “They go on campouts, learn different skills like the archery and participate in our community through annual fundraisers like the holiday wreath sale and Christmas tree pick-up.”

The Cub Scouts serve boys ranging from first to fifth grade and then the boys move onto becoming Boy Scouts as part of the larger umbrella organization. Pack 513 serves the local Plumas Lake area and is has openings at all grade levels.

The membership fees to join include an annual fee to the Boy Scouts of America of $15 and then monthly fees to the local pack of $24. The fees can be paid by parents but are oftentimes paid by the scout, who will have many opportunities throughout the year to earn monthly dues.

Osmun encourages individuals interested in signing up to contact her at 701-0931 for more information.
