It’s summer – got plans?
June marks the beginning of warm weather and kids running free from school for a few months. That means parents are in search of activity options in Yuba and Sutter counties.
In Yuba City, Gauche Aquatic Park will be hosting several youth events, including a Hawaiian Luau Fun Night (June 28), Christmas in July Fun Night (July 26) and a Karaoke Teen Night (Aug. 1). Additionally, GAP will continue to offer open swimming time slots between noon and 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. each day.
Yuba City Parks and Recreation is hosting a summer camp for children ranging in age from 5 to 13. Children can participate in the day camp for a single day or all week. The camp is scheduled to participate in several special field trip days, including visiting the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield, rooting on the Sacramento Monarchs basketball team and taking a day to go skating at Cal Skate.
Yuba City Parks and Rec is also offering classes for children, including martial arts, archery and basic art. For the littlest ones, the department is offering "Tots at Play" for children ages 3 to 5 that focuses on social skill development through a variety of activities. If sports are more what you are looking for, both Yuba City and the Plumas Lake Youth Sports Association (PLYSA) have many options, including
youth football, soccer, basketball and tennis.
All the classes and activities are available a variety of times and days of the week, giving parents and kids many different options. Whether it is with the PLSYA or with Yuba City Parks and Rec, classes are filling up for all summer activities so parents should act quickly.
Once day is done and nighttime brings cooler temperatures, families can enjoy themselves at the Yuba City summer concert series, which will occur biweekly on Thursday nights at GAP. Each concert will feature local bands as well as "art in the park" and a barbecue from a local service organization, which will be donating any money raised to their favorite charity. Local farmers will also be out selling your favorite fruits and vegetables.
Baseball fans can take in a ballgame and watch the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox play their rivals Thursday through Sunday nights in Marysville. For more information, visit www.goldsox.com.
Those in search of a slower pace can check out the region's many parks and recreation areas. Families can enjoy open swim times or skateboarding at Sam Brannan Park, a picnic and run through the water feature at Regency Park or climbing the mini-rockwall at the Donald F. Brown Memorial Park. Of course, if just strolling or bike riding is what you seek, try exploring the Feather River Levee bike trail with the family on a cool summer morning.
