Name: Jean Hayes

Occupation: Senior office assistant
Hobbies, interests: Gardening, camping, creating and assembling unusual/tailored gift baskets
Where do you get your news? Plumaslake.Info forums, SacBee, KCRA
What keeps you in the Plumas Lake area? I like the semi-rural atmosphere, it's quiet (with the exception of the frogs in our pond), the commute with my husband to Sacramento is a breeze, traffic wise, and we get "us" time. The neighbors are friendly and thoughtful. In case you hadn't heard, if you wave at someone here, they actually wave back.
What aspects about the community attracted you here initially? To be truthful, my impression of the developments when they first started was "Who would want to live in these generic box houses next to the train tracks, in the middle of nowhere, with not a scrap of green anywhere. Six months later, we went back to look again and decided that it wasn't so bad, the scenery and wildlife was calming and Wheatland High School was deemed to be a top ranking school, which was our main objective, second to a bigger house/lot. Home prices were the determining factor through it all.
Do you belong to any clubs or organizations in the community? Plumas Lake Culinary Association - if that counts. We are hoping to see a Miata Car Club start here in Plumas Lake, but until then, we belong to SAMOA - the club in Sacramento.
If you were in charge, what would you change about the Plumas Lake community? I wouldn't change anything, but I would add a large multi-purpose community center made up of one large building and two small ones that could be rented by Plumas Lake residents for special events from birthdays, weddings and anniversaries and whole community gatherings, swap meets, etc. I would also love to see a Farmer's Market every week, at least until we get a real grocery store. It would benefit local farmers and give us the freshest product.
What are your favorite places to go in Yuba-Sutter/Mid-Valley/Sacramento area? About the only places I get to are restaurants and home improvement stores. I would have to say, my choices would be Ross and Baskin Robbins, pathetic as that is.
What is the closest you've been to a famous person? I said "Hi" to Clint Eastwood on the phone. His wife is a friend of a former co-worker of mine. I've seen William Shatner and Brandy. My daughter went to a party that Vin Diesel attended and said "He's short."
If you were granted one wish, what would you wish for? I wish that it would have never occurred to people to take drugs for purposes other than medical/mental conditions. No such thing as street drugs, dealers, drug addicts, drug-related theft, murder. Or if it were on a less grand scale, I'd love to be able to afford to be a domestic engineer, so that I could take care of my family better.
Favorite musical group: Don't everyone laugh at once - it's the Bee Gees.
Favorite television show: Just about anything on HGTV or TLC
Who do you most admire and why? My mother. She and my father raised six kids well, loved us all the same, and persevered while fighting several, then undiagnosed medical conditions that would have had the normal person throwing in the towel. Confined to a convalescent home for several years now, she doesn't make me feel guilty when it's been too long between visits, especially since my father passed away. He had been terminally ill for some time, but drove from West Sacramento to Fair Oaks every single day to see her because, as he told us, he made a promise to her father when he married her, that he would always take care of her.
Tell us about a life-changing experience: Divorce - the worst and best thing that ever happened to me
What was your first job? I worked at the McDonald's in West Sacramento when they still had 50-key cash registers, the shakes were made by hand and the only things on the menu were hamburgers, french fries, apple pies and cookies.
How would you describe yourself? Short, too fat, kind and even tempered. I am long-winded and I have a warped sense of humor. I try to make sure all of the people in my life laugh as often as possible and do all the little things that show them how much I love them.
What kind of pets do you have? A miniature red merle Australian Shepherd, a cat, five tank fish, and fish in the pond. I'm not sure how many since the last visit from our friend, the Egret.
What was your least favorite subject in school? Math. Ugh.
What are your favorite foods? Anything I don't have to cook or clean up after. I love hearty fattening foods - all the bad stuff like rib-eye with the fat, corn beef and cabbage with carrots and potatoes, etc. Pastry - the food of gods.
What was the last good book you read? "Marley & Me"
Favorite movie: It's a toss up between "50 First Dates" and "Twister."
