Getting set for summer planting
Summertime is almost here. It seems like just yesterday we were getting in our spring veggies, and now it's time to plan those summer makeovers! A new gazebo for that quiet corner of the yard, maybe. Or perhaps a pond or waterfall in that largely unused flowerbed. Whatever you want to do, you need a plan.
Those of us who are actually in the industry already know exactly what I mean. A plan that addresses everything involved, from A to Z. Everything that most average homeowners don't really think about until it's too late! Things like the availability of water for those palm trees, or electricity to run that pump. Where the water will flow in a heavy rain, and where that tree may fall in a big winter storm in a few years. What the roots of that nice Cyprus tree will do to your carefully poured and sealed Concrete patio.
I'm not saying it's necessary to hire one of us, because it's not. But it is important to have a plan!
As you are figuring out what you want to do in your backyard (or your front yard, for that matter), it is important to keep in mind many little details like that. Things like the availability of a water source to keep your lawn green and your shrubs healthy. Little details, like just how much room does that Chinese Pistache tree actually need as it matures, and how much room should I allow to actually get in and trim those roses every year matter a lot. Especially when it comes to your long term satisfaction with your yard.
So before you begin, sit down and figure out as many of those details as you can! Start with the basics, What (am I going to plant), Where (am I going to plant it), Why (do I want it right there). Then you can take off!
Start with want you want your yard to look like. What plants do you really want, and where do you want them. Then design your irrigation flow around that. Many a yard has been ruined by a misdesigned watering plan. From there, plan your temporary beds (annuals and veggies), where watering may be on an "as needed" basis. Then remember your trees, they will need extra water on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule, to keep roots growing deep, and a healthy growth up top.
No matter what kind of "look" you want for your yard, whether "tropical paradise." "Northwest rainforest," or "Mediterranean classic," you need to plan for success. A good garden plan is the key to good gardening, and the key to happiness in your outdoor living space. So good planning, and happy outdoor living!
