Angel tree helps families in need
With hard economic times seeing families struggling to provide just the basics this year, the Plumas Lake Soroptimists held a successful toy drive to make the Christmas season brighter for local kids.
"We understood from the county that the usual donations from other organizations were not coming in this year," said Margo Wildman, a Plumas Lake Soroptimist. "We thought we could help."
The Soroptimist Club, recently established in Plumas Lake, is part of a larger international organization whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities. They do this through a variety of outreach programs, including scholarships and grants that are aimed at assisting women by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and job prospects. The club also reaches out to assist in needed areas in their local communities, including the toy drive for children and families within Yuba County.
The Plumas Lake Club saw a need for Christmas toy donations and aimed to fill it. Their project, dubbed the "Plumas Lake Angel Project," had a goal of donating 50 toys to the local CalWorks office. The effort paid off with a goal-breaking donation of more than 80 items earlier this month.
"We received more than 45 gifts from the Plumas Lake community, and with the help of a cash donation from Enterprise Rancheria, Estom Yumeka Maidu, we were able to purchase well over our goal of 50 gifts!" continued Wildman.
The club hopes to continue this tradition next year with an even larger goal in order to assist a larger group of people.
"In many cases this is the only gift the families will have and it was a touching experience to deliver a truckload of toys to the Cal-Works office in Marysville," said Wildman. "The employees there were extremely appreciative. On behalf of the Plumas Lake Soroptimist, thank you for making Christmas special to so many children.
