The Marysville-Yuba City Soroptimists are hosting their annual fundraiser, "Laughlines Comedy Club," on Saturday, March 5, at the Bonanza Inn Convention Center.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for pre-show roving appetizers and raffle giveaways, followed at 8 p.m. by three hilarious comedians: Sacramento-based Mike Betancourt; Cheryl "The Soccer Mom" Anderson; and headliner Michael Winslow of the "Police Academy" films, also known as "the man of 10,000 sound effects." Local dentist and personality Jimmy Earll will emcee.
"Laughlines is our major fundraiser for the year," said Soroptimists' publicity chairwoman Cherie Stephens. "It's the one big event that we invest in so we don't have to to fundraise all year long. And it is a fun night — a full evening of quality entertainment that we expect to run to about 11 p.m. People who come out will get good entertainment value for the ticket price."
"Laughlines," in its sixth year, is the Soroptimists' annual fundraiser to benefit the group's service projects, said Soroptimists' membership chairwoman Jackie Sillman. The organization has been active locally for 90 years.
Members of Marysville-Yuba City Soroptimist International are constantly involved in community service, Sillman added. The group sponsors "Girls on the Run"; the Violet Richardson Award, given annually to a young woman seeking higher education; and the "S" club at high schools, to promote the spirit of service in youth. They have also donated backpacks to children through Hands of Hope; adopted needy families during the holidays; and provide ongoing financial assitance to women facing challenges that hold them back from reaching their goals.
Tickets for "Laughlines" are $35 and may be purchased in advance at Stephens Farmhouse, located 7 miles south of Yuba City on Highway 99 at 6219 Sawtelle Ave., or online at brownpapertickets.com. Upon availability, tickets may be sold at the door. For more information, contact Stephens at 673-3126 or Sillman at 749-4220.
