Teenage swimmer confirmed drowned

A teenage boy who vanished while swimming in a Yuba foothills lake has died, the Sheriff's Department confirmed on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Elk Grove resident was pulled from Lake Mildred after vanishing during a family swim on Saturday afternoon, according to sheriff's Sgt. Phil Spadini.

The teen, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was taken by ambulance to Rideout Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies were alerted at 4:41 p.m. about the drowning at the Thousand Trails campground in the 14000 block of Frenchtown Road near Oregon House.

The victim, a guest at a family reunion at Thousand Trails, swam with his cousin into a marked swimming area. The cousin returned 25 yards back to shore, but the victim slipped under the surface.

A deputy and local firefighter rescued the boy, but he had been under water for 25 minutes by the time he was found, Spadini said.
