Most races set for lively June primary election in Y-S
The slate is set for most offices in the June 8 primary election in Yuba and Sutter counties, with several contested races on both sides of the river after Friday's filing deadline.
Two Yuba County supervisors will face challengers, as will Sutter County Supervisor Larry Munger.
Munger is part of a crowded field that includes Horacio Paras of Yuba City, Narinder Dhaliwal of Tierra Buena, Sarb Takhar of Tierra Buena and Dick Boundy of Tierra Buena in the 3rd District race.
In Yuba County, 5th District Supervisor Hal Stocker, representing the foothills, is being challenged by Jenny Cavaliere of Oregon House, Marc Barnum of Loma Rica and Elden Fowler of Brownsville.
Linda-area Supervisor Andy Vasquez, who was appointed to the seat last year, will be challenged by Sandy Fonley and Rachel Farrell, both of Linda, in the 1st District. Fonley is a Marysville Joint Unified School District trustee.
Some elected department heads will also have contested elections.
Yuba County Clerk-Recorder Terry Hansen is being challenged by Carmel Garcia of Linda. Sutter County Clerk-Recorder Donna Johnston is facing Gabrial Singh of Live Oak.
The Yuba County assessor post will have an extended filing period, with incumbent Dave Brown choosing not to run again. Assistant Sutter County Assessor Bruce Stottlemeyer has filed for the seat, as has Olivehurst Public Utility District Director Ron Dougherty.
"The reason I'm in is I believe my administrative, financial and policy skills will serve me well," said Dougherty, a three-year Plumas Lake resident who works as an analyst for the state Department of Finance. "I think I bring a fresh and different perspective to that role."
Dougherty said he also believes a county assessor should have no connections to real estate outside his elected position. Stottlemeyer had a broker's license from the California Department of Real Estate, though it expired in 1996.
If elected, Dougherty said he planned to continue serving on both boards if legally allowed to do so, though he would consider the assessor position his primary responsibility.
He didn't envision any large-scale changes from Brown.
"As with anything when you come into a new job, after a few months you find tweaks that can be made," he said.
The deadline is extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday for any race in which an incumbent does not file. Incumbents cannot file during the extended period.
In Yuba County, assessor and superintendent of schools have extended periods, while only superintendent of schools does in Sutter County.
The Sutter County assessor position will also be contested, with incumbent Mike Strong challenged by Todd Retzloff. Retzloff's father, Tom Retzloff, lost a close race for county assessor in the 1990 primary.
Both counties will also have open, contested elections for county superintendent of schools.
Sutter County's candidates are Biggs Unified School District Superintendent Bill Cornelius and Lincrest Elementary School Principal Elisabeth Miller.
Dione Beilby, a Montessori school director and former Plumas Lake School District superintendent, and Scotia Holmes-Sanchez, principal at Cottage Hill School in Grass Valley, are seeking the Yuba County post.
In races where no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November.
