Arrrest made in rape attempt on Dark Horse Way
Fingerprint results have implicated an Elverta man in an attempted rape last month in Plumas Lake, Yuba County Sheriff Steve Durfor said Wednesday.
Marcus Charles Hagins, 18, was arrested Tuesday night at his home on the 9100 block of Rio Linda Boulevard for an incident that occurred May 15 at a house on the 1100 block of Dark Horse Way.
He was later booked into the Yuba County Jail on charges of assault with the intent to commit rape, first-degree burglary and using a weapon while attempting to commit rape.
During the incident, a 19-year-old woman awoke at about 4 a.m. to find a man whose face was covered in her bedroom with a knife. He was attempting to restrain her with duct tape when the woman's mother heard noises and came into the room. Her mother chased the man out of the house before the woman was injured, and he fled in a white compact car, according to Durfor.
Durfor said detectives suspected Hagins early on in the investigation because he was an acquaintance of the victim whose physical description and vehicle matched those of the suspect, but there wasn't enough physical evidence to arrest him until Monday when the sheriff's department received fingerprint results from the Department of Justice lab showing Hagins' prints on the duct tape.
There were no signs of forced entry into the home, but Hagins had access to house keys taken earlier from the victim's purse, according to department spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.
Hagins was still in custody Wednesday on $100,000 bail.
