Riverbottom fire chars two acres
Firefighters on Sunday snuffed out a grass fire on the Yuba City side of the Feather River, less than three weeks after another blaze charred riverbanks to the north.
The Yuba City Fire Department responded at 5:21 p.m. to reports of flames in dense vegetation off Shanghai Bend, according to Battalion Chief Robert Bills. Eight firefighters and two engines went to the scene along with a Sutter County fire engine crew.
Flames consumed two acres but caused no injuries or property damage. Though firefighters had to run hoses as much as 800 feet to attack the blaze from behind, crews contained the fire in 40 minutes and mopped up its remains by 9 p.m., Bills said.
The fire broke out five miles away from the site of a blaze that erupted Aug. 17 north of the 10th Street bridge, chasing at least six riverbottoms dwellers from their campsites.
