Softball skills on display
On March 9, South Sutter Baseball & Softball hosted a coaches and softball skills clinic at the ball fields in East Nicolaus. The day kicked off at 9 a.m. with the coaches clinic, which ran until about 11 a.m. Then the girls finally got to get out on the field.
The girls started their warmups and moved right into learning how to properly throw the ball, to field ground balls and fly balls, and hit and bunt. After
they took a short break for lunch, they all received instruction on pitching or catching. It was a full day of softball fun in East Nicolaus with beautiful
weather.
The coaches clinic was presented by Bill Biggs, the Lindhurst High School varsity softball coach. It was attended by about 15 coaches and managers from South Sutter teams, as well as a few from surrounding leagues. The coaches and managers received two hours of instruction on throwing, hitting, fielding, pitching, drills and how to organize a practice. The clinic was free.
Demonstrations were done at the coaches clinic by a few of the girls who play at Lindhurst High School, and girls who play for Drop Zone traveling softball and East Nicolaus High School.
After the coaches clinic, the softball clinic began, with about 50 girls ages 7 to 13 participating. Every girl who participated received a T-shirt with brightpink lettering that read, “South Sutter Softball 2008.” They also received lunch, which included a hot dog or hamburger, chips and a drink.
They were split by age and received instruction from some of the East Nicolaus High School varsity players, Lindhurst varsity players, and Biggs. The girls had a great time and learned things that they can take with them out on to the field this upcoming season.
The clinic wasn’t even over yet and one of the young girls was heard asking if she could do it again next weekend.
