Resident seeks to broaden Plumas Lake sports opportunities
Disheartened by the amount of opportunities for children of all ages to get involved in local sports in the community, Terry Masse is making it his mission to widen the choices.
Masse, the father of three children ages 13, 10 and 8, has been doing all he can to spread the word about the need to form a Plumas Lake Youth Sports Association that would work to bring sports leagues to the community. “One of the unique opportunities we have living here in Plumas Lake is the ability to shape the recreational resources for our children,” said Masse, who originally reached out to the Little League regional director to form a league in Plumas Lake. When the league was unwilling to allow the group to form, Masse said, he and some fellow league parents felt the next step would be for the community to look
for other options.
The option that seemed to fit was a double prong approach that involved partnering up with the South Sutter Little League, which
was also unhappy with the league, and branching out to combine forces and start a new league and associate with the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken league. Secondly, to address future needs in all sports areas, Masse in conjunction with more than half-a-dozen community parents, are in the beginning stages of developing the sports association.
The association would be a non-profit organization that would allow the community to raise funds and work with public entities
to arrange sports options for leagues, including baseball, soccer and Pop Warner football. The association would be run by a board of parents and community volunteers that would work to develop by-laws giving the organization the ability to work with the county and school district to utilize local fields and amenities for the leagues to use for games and practices.
The association has submitted its Article of Incorporation to the California Secretary of State’s office and will now work to establish a full board of likely eight members. As these steps occur, Masse and others are looking for more community volunteers who would like to become involved in getting both the association off the ground as well as the new Little League established, with enough coaches to instruct the children in Plumas Lake and South Sutter who would like to play next spring.
“This is our chance to make something great, starting from scratch,” says Masse, “and we welcome any and all volunteers that
want to work with us to establish this from the ground up. Who knows- a few years down the road our very small association now may have enough support to work towards a recreation center to give even more options to our kids.”
